Jesus has an amazing conversation with a desperate father in Mark 9.  The father’s son had experienced the condition of demon possession for years, and his father knew that Jesus was ultimately the last option of true healing for his demon-possessed son.  He took his child to Jesus, but was turned away by the disciples who sought to ‘take care of the situation’ themselves by commanding the spirits to leave, but with no results.   Their arguments and statements of frustration soon rose to a level of being heard by all, including Jesus.

Jesus engages in conversation with the man.  He hears the brokenness of the father in his words and tears.  Near the end of the man’s recounting of his son’s situation he says to Jesus,  “’if you can do anything, have compassion on us and help us. And Jesus said to him, ‘If you can’! All things are possible for one who believes.’” Immediately the father of the child cried out and said, “I believe; help my unbelief!” (Mark 9:14-24) ESV

Do you identify with this man?  I know I have prayed that same prayer many times, ‘help my unbelief’.  I am grateful that Jesus talks about faith in terms of a mustard seed - little with the potential to grow larger day by day. We are not in a state of having attained the perfect amount of faith yet, but we recognize that the ability to believe and the experience of faith is all of God Himself.

A.W. Tozer says, “God is looking for those with whom He can do the impossible – what a pity that we plan only the things that we can do by ourselves.”   This father in Mark 9 was asking the impossible…total release from the torment of evil spirits that possessed his son.  Yet even with his ‘small faith’ Jesus was able to restore his son to a place of healing and wholeness.

Pray today that God will give you eyes to see and ears to hear when it is time to step out in greater faith.  He does not call us to what we can do, but to what is impossible in our own power.  May His glory will be revealed our weakness.
