My life did not turn out the way I had planned. Perhaps you can relate. When I was younger, I imagined my life turning out quite differently than my current reality.

Although things change, people change and hearts change, God remains the same. He is the same yesterday, today and forever.

God's Word tells us, "You can make many plans, but the Lord’s purpose will prevail" (Proverbs 19:21, NLT). God is in the heart business, seeking those who are surrendered to Him. "The eyes of the LORD search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him" (2 Chronicles 16:9, NLT). A life surrendered to God can prove that His ways are higher, and His plans are greater.

Mary is a perfect example of surrendered plans to the Lord. When the angel of the Lord appeared to her, she received news that she would give birth to the Son of God. But wait, Mary had plans! She was engaged to be married to Joseph and she was excited about it. Her dreams and plans completely changed the moment she received the news. The Holy Spirit came upon her and she became pregnant, yet her response was like none other. When the angel of the Lord appeared to her, she responded as many of us should: “I am the Lord’s servant. May everything you have said about me come true” (Luke 1:38, NLT).

Of course, Mary had questions. We might have them too. It's okay to go to the Lord and inquire. If we ask our questions with the hope and expectancy that, no matter what the answer is we will continue to trust in Him, we are saying to God that we are ready to fully surrender ourselves to a life of obedience. Just like Mary.

How do we respond to a change of plans?

I'm sure Mary did not initially understand how big of a role she was to play in changing the course of history by giving birth to the Savior of the world. Regardless, her obedient heart was open to being used by God. And He used her in a mighty way.

This holiday season, as we make plans and put expectations on ourselves and others, let's remember that God is in control. A life surrendered to Him involves resting and trusting in His provision and in His timing. It may not always make sense, but if God is in it, we can trust it'll be better than we could have ever imagined.
