This is very hard for me to admit, but I used to be a control freak. There were certain areas in my life that were “all mine,” and it was as if I was saying to God, “Don’t worry, I got this. I can handle this myself.

This word freaked me out years ago. It meant I had to let go. It meant I had to give up control in the areas I felt confident in. Sisters, every area that I didn’t surrender to God eventually came crashing down. God’s grace and mercy revealed so much junk that needed to be sifted and pruned out of my life. Surrender involved a deliberate and consistent act of laying down areas of my life that I refused to allow God into. When I began to surrender specific things to God, things that I held too tightly, God began to move and show me His ways are far better than mine.

There are things in life that we can’t control. Knowing Who is in control should set us free from the bondage of worry, and the need to manipulate what God has already prepared.

It might be our marriage, our family, our finances, or workplace, but whatever we are holding back or holding in, God wants us to relinquish control to Him. Surrender is a bold statement in a believer’s walk. It demonstrates trust, faith, hope, and obedience in our Maker. Surrender says, “I can’t, but God can.” I’ll be the first to admit it’s not easy, but it’s the best decision we’ll ever make in every area of our life. God wants to show us how much He can do with a surrendered heart. God is so good, He is so loving and only wants the best for His children.

When we try to control situations or people, it usually ends drastically—either our hearts are burdened, or the relationship crumbles. Trying to be in control will only produce things that are not of the Lord: anxiety, worry, frustration, and chaos.

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts,
neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the Lord.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth,
so are my ways higher than your ways
and my thoughts than your thoughts.
-Isaiah 55:8-9 (NIV)

I can’t tell you why life turns out the way it does, but I can tell you that when you put your trust in Jesus, you don’t have to worry if things go your way. God’s way is always best.
