Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”
-Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

Jesus proclaimed these instructions to His own disciples, and today we recognize these verses as the Great Commission. I used to hear these words and immediately feel inadequate, as if this was a daunting task I could never live up to. How could I preach the gospel to others when I didn’t even feel comfortable in my own faith?

Thoughts like this lingered in my head until a few days ago when I read a quote by William G.T. Shedd: “A ship is safe in harbor, but that’s not what ships are built for.” Immediately, my eyes were opened, and I couldn’t help but parallel this to people like myself. Jesus tells us to go and share the good news with the world. I used to think this meant thousands of miles away, but our own families, communities, cities, and states need to hear and witness God’s Word, too.

If you are scared or have feelings of insecurity, step out in faith and ask the Father for help. The Bible tells us 365 times to not be afraid! He will provide for us in ways we can’t even imagine. Like a ship, we may be safe in our comfort zones—our harbors—but that is not we are called to do. We must set sail and bring others to the one, true safe zone—Christ.
