For years I thought prayer was just an added obligation to the list of things I needed to do for the Lord. Prayer was something I did before going to bed and before meals, and I did so begrudgingly, especially when I was "hangry."

I used to think prayer had to sound like poetry; I thought it had to include rich vocabulary sprinkled with quoted Scripture and a bunch of "thees" and "thous."

Sisters, prayer isn't a passive act. It's a force to be reckoned with. It's like plugging into a holy outlet and receiving power from the main source, our Father in Heaven. If we could put on spiritual "goggles" and see what was going on the second we started praying, I think our prayer life would start to look a lot different. God is not after the lofty, repetitive prayers. He's after our hearts. He wants us to meet with Him, talk with Him, and fellowship with Him. Although it's always a good idea to pray on a regular basis, there isn't a specific time or place we need to pray. We can meet with Him anytime. We can talk to God about anything. He's always there, and He's always listening.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." -Philippians 4:6-7 (NIV)

Prayer changes everything: it changes us, it changes circumstances, and most importantly, it connects us to God. James 4:8 says, "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (ESV). Prayer isn't something on our list of "Christian to-dos," but an act of worship, an opportunity to meet with the Father. Prayer is talking to God, opening our heart, and focusing on Him.

I don't know how I ever lived without intentional prayer. Over the years, I've learned that prayer isn't something I just do when I need something from God, but it's something I need to do and want to do to feel His presence and peace. It gives me hope and assurance that whatever I'm going through, no matter what I'm facing, God is listening, and He has it all under control.
