Daily Delight

My absolute favorite place to go on Saturdays for lunch is Panera Bread. I order my food and go find a table in front of the fireplace to enjoy the atmosphere. However, this past week I noticed my usual spot was taken by what looked to be a homeless man.

While I searched for another seat, frustration taking over my thoughts, I noticed others staring and moving farther away to avoid the man’s presence. Although I had been inconvenienced, I couldn’t help but feel sorry for him. No, I didn’t know his story, but I suddenly had a desire to give him money, for I’m sure he was hungry. I looked in my purse and found the only cash I had on me at the time, a $10 bill.

At this point of the story, I wish I could say I willingly gave him the money. I wish I could say that my act of kindness, perhaps the only act of kindness this man had seen all day, warmed both of our hearts. I wish I would have felt like $10 wasn’t enough to give him; but instead, I thought it was too much. I had just overpaid for food that I didn’t even need, yet I couldn’t give up $10 for someone who truly did need it.

Sweet sisters, I pray that whenever we feel the Holy Spirit inside of us, we will act in the way Jesus would. Proverbs 3:27 states, “Do not withhold good from those who deserve it when it’s in your power to help them” (NIV). Even though we can let our selfish instincts take control, may we allow the power of Christ to overcome these thoughts and actions to bring good to others!
