My pastor gave this analogy in a sermon the other week:

Picture two Israelites. God just instructed them to put blood on their doorpost so that their firstborns would be saved in the Passover. One Israelite had huge, jubilant faith in God. He said enthusiastically to the other, "Did you put the blood on your doorpost?!" The other said, "I mean it seems kinda weird to me, I don't really understand what God is doing. But yes, I did it." And you know what happened? God's will was carried out. Both men's firstborns were saved because they were faithful and obedient. Were the amounts of their faith the same? No. One was enthusiastically faithful, the other was confused with a little amount of faith.

But they both had faith.

You see, God doesn't accomplish His plans according to the amount of faith we have. But we are commanded to have faith. "And without faith it is impossible to please Him" (Heb.11:6, NIV). Sometimes it's easy as believers to put the burden on ourselves to always have a huge amount of energetic faith in what God is doing, to never allow ourselves to say that we don't understand, we are scared, and while we trust in our Father, our faith feels small right now. Admitting that we don't have as much faith as we've had in other situations doesn't mean God won't carry through with His promises.

Take a moment and read Hebrews 11, the "Hall of Faith." Nobody listed here was perfect, always having unwavering faith. But the point is, they always had faith, whether little or abundant. These believers made mistakes, questioned God, were scared and confused at times, but their faith was there throughout. And through all of their lives, no matter what amount of faith they had, God's will was accomplished.

Friends, we are commanded to have faith. However, rest in the peace of knowing that God's plan will prevail whether you are bursting at the seams with faith or clinging to that tiny mustard seed (Matt. 17:20).
