Choosing the Narrow Path: Living a Faithful Christian Life in a Self-Serving World
Imagine walking down a path and finding yourself suddenly captivated by its beauty. Every turn seems to lead straight to the things your flesh has always desired.
Before long, you come to a fork in the road.
To your left, the path stretches on for miles. It is wide, familiar, and easy to follow. To your right, you can see only fifteen to twenty feet ahead. The rest of the path is hidden from view.
At first glance, the path on the left seems like the obvious choice. It is comfortable…predictable. You can see where it leads, and it seems to offer everything you want. It feels safe, like it was made for you.
But in your heart, you sense a quiet nudge to consider the path on the right. It is far less appealing. You cannot see where it leads. You do not know what you will encounter. It does not promise ease or certainty.
The Voice That Interrupts Our Logic
As you stand there weighing your options, the words of Scripture come rushing to mind.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10
The words stop you in your tracks. They are timely and unmistakable. The path to the left still pulls at you, but you know these words were meant for the path on the right.
So you are left with a question that presses on the heart.
Which path will you take?
The World’s Path and Its Empty Promises
We live in a world fueled by consumerism and self-interest. We are constantly told what we need, when we need it, and how quickly we should have it. If we cannot afford it, we are encouraged to go into debt to obtain it.
When we resist, we feel proud of our self-control and reassure ourselves that we made the right choice. That confidence lasts until the very thing we denied ourselves begins trending everywhere we look. Then guilt and shame quickly take their place.
This is the rhythm of the world we live in. It is loud, demanding, and never satisfied.
A Life God Desires for His People
This is not the life God desires for His people. While a life lived with God is not always as clear as we would like it to be, Scripture shows us through the life of Christ that it is the only life worth living.
As the church, we are called to live with heaven in mind. We are not meant to become entangled in the ways of this world or shaped by its values. Our lives are meant to reflect something different, something eternal.
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. -2 Corinthians 4:18
In the picture painted above, the wide path to the left represents the deceptive way the enemy uses to draw our hearts away from God and His design.
How often have we found ourselves walking that path?
The Reality of the Human Heart
Whether we would like to admit it or not, we are selfish at our core. In our fallen condition, we cannot choose God on our own. Apart from His grace and intervention, our hearts naturally drift toward what is easy, visible, and self-serving.
This truth can feel sobering, but it is not without hope.
New Mercies Every Morning
The good news is that the mercies of our loving and gracious Father are new every morning. He does not abandon His children or turn away when we stumble.
“Because of the LORD’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.” -Lamentations 3:22–23
God remains faithful even when we struggle to remain faithful to Him.
What It Means to Live as Children of God
As children of God, we are called to proclaim the good news of the Gospel. God loves the world. He has redeemed it through the cross of our Savior, Jesus Christ. He desires to save and restore what has been broken.
But proclamation must be paired with a life that reflects that truth.
We are called to live an authentic Christian life, marked by dependence on God and obedience to His Word.
The question remains. How do we do that in a world constantly pulling us in the opposite direction?
A Simple Framework for Faithful Living
John Piper offers a helpful framework for believers today known as APTAT. It provides practical guidance for living a life anchored in Christ.
Admit Your Need for Christ
We begin by admitting that we are nothing and can do nothing apart from Christ. Without Him, we are spiritually helpless and unable to bear fruit.
“I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.” -John 15:5
Pray for God’s Help
After acknowledging our dependence on Christ, we must pray for His help. Prayer is not a last resort. It is the means by which we rely on God’s strength rather than our own.
“Ask and you will receive, that your joy may be complete.” -John 16:24
Trust God in Every Circumstance
We are called to trust that no matter what situation we find ourselves in, God is with us and for us. His presence does not disappear when the path feels unclear.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” -Isaiah 41:10
Act in Obedience to God’s Word
Obedience often requires choosing the narrow path, even when the wider road feels easier or more appealing. It is a daily decision to trust that God’s Word leads to life.
Acting in obedience does not mean we rely on our own strength. It means we step forward in faith while asking God to supply what we lack. As we seek to live in alignment with His will, we pray for His help, knowing that obedience apart from Him is impossible.
“For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” -Romans 8:13
Thank God Always
Gratitude anchors our hearts in truth. When we thank God in every season, we acknowledge His goodness and sovereignty regardless of our circumstances.
Thankfulness shifts our focus away from what we lack and toward who God is. It reminds us that He is present, faithful, and actively at work in our lives, even when we cannot see the full picture.
“Always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” -Ephesians 5:20
Living as Salt and Light in a World Searching for Meaning
May we incorporate these everyday practices into our lives and be changed by them.
May we live by the Spirit and walk in faith, choosing obedience even when the path ahead is unclear.
May we be salt and light to a world that is deeply aware of its emptiness and longing for something more than it can offer itself.
And above all, may the name of the Lord be known and honored through our lives.
