Faith in the Fog: When God’s Direction Feels Confusing

“But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the Red Sea…” (Exodus 13:18)

As modern readers, we know what’s coming next. But the Israelites living this story didn’t. They were on a journey from slavery in Egypt to freedom in the Promised Land, led by God Himself.

By all logic, the path should’ve been smooth. Easy, even. After all, it was the God of the Universe who was leading the way—so why lead them straight to a sea with no way through?

Did God Miss an Exit?

It might’ve looked like a mistake to the people following Him, but it wasn’t. The Red Sea wasn’t a detour or a delay—it was an opportunity. God used it to reveal Himself as the miracle-working Way-Maker of the highest order.

And just like the Israelites, maybe today you’re facing a Red Sea situation.

  • You thought you heard God clearly.

  • You stepped out in faith.

  • You quit the job, moved to a new city, started the business…

And now, an obstacle looms large in front of you. You’ve prayed and asked, “Why?” more times than you can count—and still, silence.

The God Who Makes a Way

Friend, we may never get all the answers this side of heaven. But Scripture assures us:

“All things work together for good, for those who are called according to His purpose.” (Romans 8:28)

You may not know the next step—but He does.
You may feel caught off guard—but He isn’t.

If He has led you to the Red Sea, He will be faithful to lead you through it—just as He did for the Israelites. He parted the waters so they could walk on dry ground.

Hold On to Hope

One of my favorite quotes by Christine Caine says: “Impossible is where God starts. Miracles are what God does.”

So if today feels like a dead end, may it also be the beginning of deeper trust in the God who makes a way where there is none.

A Prayer for the Red Sea Seasons

Heavenly Father, I believe that You are a loving Father and a miracle-working God. Today, help my spirit to be at rest, knowing that I am safe under the shadow of Your wings. I put my trust in You. Even though I do not see a way forward, I believe that You are working all things out and making a way for me. Thank You for Your amazing love toward me. Amen.
