Why Christians Must Be Vessels of Truth, Not Exploiters of Feelings

In a culture where feelings are often elevated as ultimate authority, Christians are called to something greater.

Scripture reminds us that “the heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately sick” (Jeremiah 17:9). If we build our lives on fleeting emotions, we risk distorting truth for the sake of relatability or approval.

Feelings Are a Gift, Not a Guide

Emotions are a beautiful part of God’s design. They remind us of our humanity and His image in us. Joy, sorrow, compassion, and righteous anger all point us to the reality of a God who feels deeply.

Yet our feelings were never meant to lead the way.

Instead, they are to be stewarded under the authority of God’s Word and Spirit.

The Call to Truth and Love

Ephesians 4:15 urges us to “speak the truth in love.” This balance is essential. Truth without love can crush, while love without truth can mislead. Together, they mirror the fullness of Christ, who came full of grace and truth (John 1:14).

Seeking the Kingdom First

When we allow feelings to dictate our choices, we risk veering away from God’s best for us. But when we seek first His Kingdom (Matthew 6:33), we align our emotions with His eternal purposes. Feelings may spark attention, but only God’s truth transforms lives.

Practical Surrender with Scripture

So how do we actually surrender our emotions to the Lord?

– Prioritize being a student of God’s Word every day.
– Bring your feelings to God in prayer.
– Test them against His Word.
–Seek wise counsel.
– Invite the Spirit to lead, even when your emotions pull in another direction.

As Proverbs 3:5–6 (ESV) reminds us: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.”

When we surrender our emotions this way, something beautiful happens. Our feelings become opportunities for worship and they are transformed into tools the Lord uses to deepen our dependence on Him and grow us in Christlikeness.

Reflection Questions

– Where am I tempted to let feelings lead over truth?
– How can I steward my emotions in a way that honors the Lord?
– Who in my life needs me to lovingly speak truth rather than affirm temporary feelings?

A Closing Prayer

Lord, help me to be a vessel of Your truth, glory, and love. Teach me to honor the feelings You’ve given me, but not to be governed by them. Anchor me in Your Word, and guide me always to seek first Your Kingdom. Amen.
