Restoring the Joy of Your Salvation: Returning to the Well That Never Runs Dry
Do you remember when God’s call became irresistible in your heart?
Maybe it happened in childhood, or maybe it happened recently. Perhaps it was a moment of quiet conviction or a season where the Holy Spirit opened your eyes to the beauty of Christ. No matter how He drew you, it is a moment you never forget.
Peter describes this joy with incredible clarity when he writes:
“Though you have not seen Him, you love Him. Though you do not now see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory.” -1 Peter 1:8 to 9
This is the deep, inexpressible joy that comes when God awakens our hearts to salvation. It is supernatural. It is unforgettable. It is evidence of His grace at work in us.
When Joy Grows Dim
Time has a way of piling burdens onto our hearts. Fall schedules, holiday pressure, grief, sorrow, illness, disappointment, and everyday responsibilities can all crowd out the joy that once felt so clear.
It is not that we stop loving Jesus. It is not that we stop believing. It is simply that life in a broken world often weighs heavily on our shoulders.
We forget. We grow tired. We lose sight of the joy that first flooded our hearts.
But Scripture tells us that joy can be restored. God is not threatened by our weakness. He invites us to come back to Him.
David’s Cry for Restoration
After David walked through profound failure and repentance, he prayed a simple and sincere prayer:
“Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” -Psalm 51:12
David understood that it is possible to possess salvation and yet lose the joy of it. He also understood that joy is something God delights to restore.
His prayer is our prayer too. We can ask God to return us to the delight we once felt because He is the giver and sustainer of that joy.
Why Joy Can Be Restored
Our joy can be restored because it is not anchored in our performance or our feelings. It is anchored in the finished work of Christ.
What Jesus accomplished allows us to draw water from the well of salvation with joy.
Isaiah 12:3 says, “With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.”
This well never runs dry.
Jesus told the Samaritan woman in John 4 that the water He gives becomes a spring of eternal life within us. Salvation is not a moment we leave behind. It is an ongoing source of joy that strengthens, nourishes, and renews our hearts.
When joy feels distant, the well of salvation remains full. We return to God, and He restores joy again.
Returning to the Well That Never Runs Dry
If you are longing for joy today, consider this a gentle invitation to return to the One who gives it. Cry out to God the way David did. Sit with Him in stillness. Reflect on the gift of salvation.
Joy does not return through striving. Joy returns through drawing near.
The well is still full.
Jesus is still ready to restore your joy.
A Prayer for Restored Joy
Jesus, thank You for Your sacrifice. Thank You for laying down Your life so I can experience the joy of salvation. Life can feel heavy and the holiday season can become very busy, but I ask that You keep bringing me back to the deep joy that comes from knowing You. Restore to me the joy of Your salvation. Amen.
