The Great I Am: God’s Reassurance Amid Our Doubts

Moses said to God, “Suppose I go to the Israelites and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ Then what shall I tell them?” God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” —Exodus 3:13–14

When Doubt Feels Too Heavy

When our doubts feel too heavy for our hands, we can rest in the truth that they fit perfectly in His.

It’s easy to believe our questions are too big or too messy to bring before God—as if we need to tidy up before coming to Him. But the truth revealed in Exodus 3 is the opposite: God welcomes us into His plans even in the midst of our doubts, weaknesses, and insecurities.

God’s Presence in the Midst of Fear

In Exodus 3:1–10, Moses encounters God through the burning bush. The weight of representing God and leading the Israelites overwhelms him, prompting his question in verse 11: “Who am I that I should go?”

God’s response is not one of dismissal but of reassurance. He reminds Moses that His presence is enough. In verse 14, He declares His name: “I AM.” The Hebrew word Ehyeh—a form of the verb “to be,” meaning “I will be”—reveals His eternal nature and faithfulness. Through this name, God reminds Moses that He is constant, powerful, and sufficient.

God’s Sufficiency Over Our Shortcomings

The exchange between Moses and God reminds us that His promises and plans are grounded in His unchanging sufficiency. Our doubts and insecurities don’t disqualify us—they become opportunities for His strength to shine. When we surrender our limitations, God creates beauty out of our brokenness.

Your failures are not final. Your doubts don’t distance you from God. When you trust Him with what feels uncertain, you step into the freedom of knowing that the Great I Am goes with you—every step of the way.
