Good and Gracious Words: Lessons from Proverbs on the Power of Encouragement

Seasons of trial and hardship often test the depth of our faith.

We know God is near, yet we still wrestle with doubt. We believe He hears our prayers, but weariness sometimes overshadows our confidence.

Even when we cling to the Gospel—the good news that has transformed our lives—our hearts can still feel heavy and distant. The weight of anxiety, fear, or uncertainty can cloud our vision, making it difficult to see the glorious hope we have in Christ.

This is why God, in His wisdom, designed us for fellowship and community. He knew we could not walk through life alone. He calls us to lean on one another for encouragement, accountability, and support.

The Power of a Good Word

The book of Proverbs speaks often about the importance of our words, and two verses in particular remind us just how powerful they can be.

Proverbs 12:25 — A Good Word Brings Gladness

“Anxiety in a man's heart weighs him down,
but a good word makes him glad.” (ESV)

Anxiety has a way of pulling us under, leaving us feeling heavy and disoriented. Yet a simple, Spirit-led word of encouragement can bring unexpected joy to a weary soul.

When a friend reminds us of God’s promises, or a sister in Christ speaks life over us, hope begins to stir again. The Gospel becomes clearer, and we are strengthened to keep going.

Proverbs 16:24 — Gracious Words Bring Healing

“Gracious words are like a honeycomb,
sweetness to the soul and health to the body.” (ESV)

Kindness and encouragement are not only sweet to the spirit—they can be deeply healing. When we feel defeated, gracious words restore us. When we are worn down, they lift us up and remind us of God’s faithfulness.

In the body of Christ, words of life have the power to strengthen our relationships, unify the Church, and glorify God. When we speak truth rooted in Scripture, we offer more than temporary comfort—we point one another back to eternal hope.

The Beauty of Biblical Encouragement

Think back on your own journey of faith. Can you remember a time when life felt hopeless, and the kindness of another believer became a lifeline of hope?

Or maybe you’ve experienced the joy of offering someone else an encouraging word when they needed it most. These moments remind us that God often uses His people to carry out His work of sustaining and strengthening His children.

This is where the beauty of the Church shines brightest. God designed the body of Christ to reflect His heart, and our words are one of the simplest yet most powerful ways we can love one another.

Living Intentionally with Our Words

There’s an old saying: “Kind words cost little but mean much.” That couldn’t be more true. We often have no idea how deeply a single word of encouragement can impact someone’s heart.

When we take the time to speak life-giving words—rooted in Scripture and pointing to God’s truth—we not only bless others but also glorify Christ. Our words carry weight. They can either tear down or build up, wound or heal, discourage or inspire.

As followers of Jesus, we’re called to choose wisely. Let us be proactive and intentional in the way we speak to our families, friends, and fellow believers. May our words be good and gracious, reflecting the heart of our Savior.

Reflect

  • Who in your life could use a word of encouragement today?

  • How can you speak truth that points someone back to God’s promises?

  • What step can you take to make your words sweeter, kinder, and more life-giving?
