When Jesus Called the Canaanite Woman a Dog: Understanding His Words
“Jesus said to her, ‘Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted.’” (Matthew 15:28a, NIV)
Have you ever struggled with understanding Jesus’ tone when reading His words? I have. He described Himself as gentle and lowly (Matthew 11:29), He spent time with the outcasts (Luke 5:30–32), and children loved being around Him (Mark 10:13–16).
With this kind of reputation, surely He was approachable and kind, right?
That’s why every time I come across the story of the Canaanite woman in Matthew 15:21–28, I get uncomfortable. At first glance, His response doesn’t seem to line up with His character. Jesus begins by ignoring her desperate cries, and when He finally speaks, He refers to her using a word that seems insulting. It presses on my discomfort and—if I’m honest—sometimes stirs doubt about His heart.
Looking Deeper into the Passage
As I prayed about this and researched further, several key insights stood out:
1. Jesus Went Out of His Way
The region where Jesus met this woman was about 50 miles from Israel. Jewish people, especially teachers like Him, didn’t typically travel to places like that. Yet this is the only recorded event of His ministry in that area. What if He went there just for her?
2. The “Dog” Comment Isn’t What It Seems
Jews of that time often referred to Gentiles (non-Jews) as unclean and compared them to dogs. But Jesus chose a different Greek word, one that described a household pet—a beloved animal cared for by the family. By using this word, He was signaling something deeper. He came first to the Jews, but also for the Gentiles (Romans 1:16). His words weren’t dismissive; they reflected His mission order while still expressing love and inclusion.
This made me pause: What assumptions have I made about Jesus because of my limited cultural or historical understanding?
3. Her Perseverance Revealed Great Faith
Jesus’ silence tested the woman’s faith, but she didn’t give up. When ignored, she kept pleading on behalf of her daughter. When challenged, she responded with respect, humility, and wisdom. Her persistence moved Him, and He not only granted her request but also praised her faith as “great.”
What This Means for Us
We serve a good God who calls us to persevere in faith. If you are in a season where God seems silent or you’re waiting for an answer that hasn’t come, let this story encourage you.
Trust His heart. Keep seeking Him. Don’t let go.
Like the Canaanite woman, your persistence in prayer and trust in God’s character may be the very expression of “great faith” He longs to see in you.
